What baling wire is best for vertical balers?

Vertical balers are common in medium-volume recycling facilities. They usually require manual operation and bale ties to secure bales. To choose the right baling wire for your vertical baler, find wire that satisfies the following three criteria:

  1. Material requirements
  2. Baler requirements
  3. Storage requirements

A wire that is compatible with your baler, strong enough to bind materials, and corrosion-resistant enough to safely store bales is the best choice.

Material requirements

Each type of material requires a different load strength to secure the bale. Lighter materials, such as foam and paper products, can be baled with higher gauge (smaller diameter) wire. Heavier bales often require high-tensile wire.

For heavier materials, our 9 gauge galvanized double loop bale ties offer an impressive tensile strength of 220,000 psi.

We recommend the followinggauges for baling recyclables with vertical balers:

Baler requirements

To select the best wire for your baler, determine whether it is an automatic or manual tie baler. Vertical balers are usually manual tie, requiringbale ties (also wire ties). The baler operator manually fastens these wires. They are available in single loop and double loop configurations, depending on the baler.

Some vertical balers work best with certain wire gauges. Read your baling machine manual, or contact your baler manufacturer to choose the best wire gauge. Check out our baling wire gauge guide to learn more.

Storage requirements

Determine the conditions in which your bales will be stored, as well as for how long. If you are shipping your bales after processing, consult the recycling facility to see if they have any specific wire requirements.

Uncoated baling wire will gradually rust when exposed to corrosive, humid, or wet conditions. Annealed wire also rusts since its wax coating isn’t meant for long-term protection.

Use galvanized wire for bales that will be stored outside for extended periods. Galvanization coats wire in a protective zinc layer, specifically engineered to prevent rust and corrosion. Different galvanization classes measure the thickness of a wire’s zinc coat.

While we offer Class 1 and Class 3 galvanization, a Class 3 galvanized coating provides superior protection against the elements, making it the best choice for bales that will be stored outdoors.

Product recommendations for vertical balers

Here are some of our most popular types of wire for vertical balers.

Single loop bale ties

Our 12 gauge annealed single loop bale ties are a common type of wire for vertical balers. Single loop configurations are easy to use, and the annealing process improves a wire’s flexibility and elongation. Annealed bale ties are commonly used to bale recyclables that don’t require long-term storage, such as tissue paper, or expansive materials, such as rubber tires.

Double loop bale ties

Our 11 gauge bright double loop bale ties simplify manual tying. Double loop configurations are precut to specific sizes, so they work best with recyclables such as office paper, which produce uniformly sized bales. Unfinished (bright) baling wire is also less expensive than other wire finishes, offering an economical solution for applications that don’t require corrosion resistance.
