How thick is 14 gauge wire?

Our 14 gauge baling wire measures 0.077–0.079 inches (1.96–2.01 mm)in diameter.

Wire gauge is a measurement that stems from the wire manufacturing process, which involves drawing wires through a series of progressively smaller holes to achieve the desired thinness. The drawing process uses a draw plate, which is a tool with conical or cylindrical holes that decrease in size.

A wire’s gauge is inversely correlated to its thickness, counterintuitive as that seems. The larger the gauge, the smaller the diameter, and vice versa.

For example, when we compare 13 gauge vs. 14 gauge wire, we see that 14 gauge wire is slightly thinner than 13 gauge wire, as it has undergone 14 drawing cycles instead of 13.

One of the primary tools used to measure and identify wire thickness is the American Wire Gauge (AWG) system. Developed in the United States, it is widely used throughout North America.

SWG (Standard Wire Gauge), also known as Imperial Wire Gauge, is most commonly used in the United Kingdom. Our baling wire gauge guide offers a deeper look at wire gauge and thickness.

Why is wire gauge important?

Wire gauge is important because it identifies a wire’s thickness and relative strength, which in turn helps determine what applications the wire is best suited for. Wire gauge is also a consideration for factors like safety, cost, and baler compatibility.

14 gauge wire is commonly used to bale recyclables, such as cardboard, plastic film, and office paper. It is not particularly suited for baling heavy, high-density materials, in which case a lower gauge wire (like a 9 or a 10) is your best bet.

You should always purchase high-quality baling wire, and make sure you select the right gauge.

Our 14 gauge baling wire products

Despite being our thinnest wire, 14 gauge wire is strong enough to bale most recyclables (excepting some heavy-duty materials). We offer the following 14 gauge wire products.

14 gauge galvanized wire

Our 14 gauge galvanized wire is less commonly used for baling recyclables and is often used on vineyards and orchards as tree support and trellising. Hot-dip galvanization leaves this wire coated in zinc, which offers substantial protection from rust and corrosion.

Galvanized wire does eventually rust, but we offer two galvanization classes so you can pick the right wire for the job. Class 3 galvanization offers a much thicker zinc coat than the basic Class 1 coating, making it a preferred choice for outdoor applications.

We sell 14 gauge galvanized wire by the stem. Each stem is approximately 1,330 lbs and 77,911 feet long.

14 gauge black annealed single loop bale ties

14 gauge black annealed single loop bale ties are similar to our galvanized single loop bale ties, but they have been annealed for increased ductility. While annealed wire does rust, its oily finish provides increased corrosion resistance compared to regular baling wire.

We sell annealed single loop bale ties in bundles of 125 and 250 at lengths of 8–21 feet.

14 gauge galvanized single loop bale ties

14 gauge galvanized single loop bales ties are used to securely tie bales of recyclables and other materials. They offer sufficient load and tensile strength for securing lighter-weight bales of non-expansive materials. The galvanized finish provides extra corrosion resistance, making them especially suited for outdoor storage and harsh environments.

We sell galvanized single loop bale ties in bundles of 125 and 250 at lengths of 8–21 feet.
